7.2 Working in the UK after Brexit

Since leaving the EU, additional regulations apply to EU citizens who wish to work in the UK. Attending events, concerts, business functions, tourism, visiting family and friends for stays of no longer than six months are not a problem. A visa is only required for stays of six months or longer; a passport valid until the end of the trip is sufficient.

Current regulations are subject to frequent changes, so it is important to obtain up-to-date information on the current situation.

  • Entry requirements for the United Kingdom are generally stricter than in some other countries. Since 2 April 2025, EU citizens (except Ireland) travelling to the United Kingdom without a visa – e.g. for tourism, business trips or short stays – must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling. EU citizens need a valid passport to enter the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland), which must be valid at least until the end of their trip. The ETA is always linked to the passport with which it was applied for.
  • Once the passport expires, the ETA also loses its validity, even if the ETA is theoretically still within its 2-year validity period.
  • Application required before travel, cost approx. £16, valid for up to 2 years, does not replace a visa.
  • Important: apply in good time to avoid problems with boarding or entry.

Citizens from non-EU countries and from EU countries with a specific purpose for travelling must, however, apply for a visa for the United Kingdom in all cases.
