Project Description

The new Central Primary School Ditzingen creates a contemporary educational ensemble that unites existing and new structures into a future-oriented learning environment.
The new building complements the renovated existing school to form a six-stream campus where architecture and pedagogy merge into a harmonious whole.
Open spatial concepts, flexible learning landscapes, and generous loggias create a bright and welcoming atmosphere that promotes interaction and community.
This project stands as a model for the transformation of existing educational buildings into resource-efficient, forward-looking spaces for learning and collaboration.

Construction Method and Material Selection

The building is constructed using an innovative timber-hybrid system with timber–concrete composite slabs.
The structure consists of high-performance hardwood (BauBuche) combined with regional softwood.
Walls and façade elements are prefabricated, including windows, insulation, and solar shading – ensuring precision, high quality, and reduced construction time.
By minimizing the use of concrete to the technically necessary level, the project achieves a resource-efficient, low-carbon construction, fully leveraging timber’s inherent advantages: lightness, sustainability, and natural comfort.

Structural Timber Protection

The vertically articulated timber cladding protects the façade from weathering and moisture.
A continuous 60 cm projecting roof overhang and horizontal offsets prevent standing water and ensure controlled drainage.
This allows the natural appearance of the timber surfaces to be preserved without chemical treatment and with minimal maintenance effort.
Here, function and form work in perfect harmony – the structural protection becomes a distinctive design feature in its own right.

Energy Efficiency Standard

The new building achieves the Efficiency House Standard EG 40 EE, utilizing a hybrid energy system combining gas condensing technology and heat pumps, with future adaptability for district heating connection.
This flexible system is designed for long-term sustainability, prioritizing renewable energy sources.
A highly insulated building envelope, optimized daylighting, and efficient building services ensure a sustainably reduced energy demand – all while maintaining a high level of user comfort.

Cooling System

The climate concept relies on passive design strategies combined with efficient building technology.
Controlled air distribution, the thermal mass of the hybrid slabs, and nighttime cooling options provide pleasant indoor temperatures throughout the year.
This naturally balanced system ensures comfort and energy efficiency with minimal reliance on active cooling.

Fire Protection Concept

Despite its timber-based construction, the school meets the highest safety and fire protection standards.
The stair cores are built in reinforced concrete and designed to be fire-resistant, while the timber-hybrid structure meets fire-retardant requirements.
The ground-floor area – including the foyer, cafeteria, and music room – is designed as an assembly space in accordance with the German Assembly Ordinance (VStättVO).
This fire protection concept demonstrates that safety and openness can coexist seamlessly in modern timber construction.

Multiple Use and Flexibility

The Central Primary School Ditzingen is more than just a place of learning – it is a house for education, culture, and community.
The ground floor, featuring the foyer, cafeteria, and music room, can be flexibly reconfigured into event spaces using movable partitions.
Thus, the building functions not only as an educational hub but also as a vibrant meeting point for the city.
Its architecture responds to the needs of contemporary school life – adaptable, open, and dynamic.
