project description

The district sports hall is part of the Ravensburg district’s 2020–2040 school construction program and a pilot project for the Sustainable Building Guidelines (LNB). It not only enhances the educational offerings, but also promotes social interaction on campus. The adjacent Josef-Dreier-Platz honors the long-time school principal and symbolically connects the city and the district.
Designed by Steimle Architekten from Stuttgart, the hall impresses with its clear design language and harmonious integration into the existing school environment.

Construction method and material selection

The building was constructed using a hybrid wood-concrete construction method. The exterior walls are timber frame construction with alternating glazed and wood-clad panels. The roof of the sports hall, with a span of 27.5 m, is constructed with glulam trusses and veneered glulam roof panels. The two-story foyer area was given a wood-reinforced concrete composite ceiling made of beech beams and a recycled concrete slab. The use of beech cross-laminated timber promotes the use of hardwoods in building designs in line with climate change adaptation.
Wooden frame elements with vertical and alternating tapered slats were developed to clad the evenly spaced compartments between the load-bearing wooden supports.

The stiffening two-story central side room brace was constructed in reinforced concrete.
The Wangen district sports hall thus combines a solid core with a filigree wooden structure. Particularly noteworthy is the use of recycled concrete for in-situ concrete and precast elements, which reduces the building’s ecological footprint. The façade consists of vertical, tapered wooden slats, complemented by a skylight strip that ensures uniform daylight illumination.

The façade varies between open and closed elements to provide both transparency and protection.
Attention was also paid to sustainability in the choice of materials: All lettering and signage

Constructive wood protection

The wooden structure of the facades is mounted on a concrete base all around. In addition, the wooden elements of the facade were treated with a pre-gray finish, which prevents severe weathering and maintains a uniform appearance.

energy efficiency standard

The hall meets the Efficiency House 40 standard and was assessed according to the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP). An innovative adiabatic cooling system ensures pleasant temperatures, while the underfloor heating is supplied by the municipal district heating system.
Thanks to a modern ventilation system with heat recovery, passive cooling, and a photovoltaic system, one-third of the electricity requirement is covered by renewable energies, ensuring a pleasant indoor climate with maximum energy savings. In addition, the integrated heat and cold recovery system ensures optimal use of the energy consumed, thus contributing significantly to the sustainability of the building.

The cooling system

An adiabatic cooling system is a particularly energy-efficient method of cooling rooms or air volumes without using conventional refrigeration systems such as compressors.
Adiabatic cooling is used, for example, for air conditioning large industrial halls or sports halls, pre-cooling outside air in ventilation systems (e.g., in schools, offices), and sometimes in modern data centers to reduce energy consumption.
In this context, “adiabatic” means without heat exchange with the environment—cooling occurs through the pure evaporation of water.
The process: Water is finely atomized (e.g., via nozzles or damp pads) and introduced into an air stream. Evaporation takes place: Water changes from a liquid to a gaseous state. In the process, evaporation heat is extracted from the air and the air temperature drops noticeably: the relative humidity increases.

fire protection concept

The two-story building was designed and constructed as a single-story meeting place in building class 3 in the area of the multi-purpose hall. A fire-retardant hybrid structure made of wood and reinforced concrete was used. A fire wall divides the building into two sections. Technical operating rooms are separated by fire-resistant partitions. No highly flammable building materials were used.

The entire building is equipped with an automatic fire alarm system that is connected to the fire department control center and supports rapid and efficient response in the event of an alarm. The multi-purpose hall was also equipped with a smoke and heat extraction system. The foyer, cafeteria, and stairwells have openings for smoke extraction. In addition, emergency lighting is provided throughout the building to ensure the use of the structural escape and rescue routes. Escape and rescue plans support the local knowledge of the people in the building. A lightning protection system for external and internal protection has been implemented.

multiple use

The three-court sports hall offers space for school sports lessons and club sports. In addition, there are two gymnastics rooms, a cafeteria with foyer, six changing rooms, and technical and control rooms. The cafeteria, operated by local caterer StoffHirsch GmbH, provides students and teachers with freshly prepared meals using the cook & chill method. With 114 seats indoors and planned outdoor seating, it creates a place for people to meet.

Urban integration

The hall is located between the North and South vocational schools, on the edge of Wangen’s old town. The closure of Jahnstraße led to the creation of the new Josef-Dreier-Platz, which connects the north and south parts of the building as a campus square. The location of the hall takes into account the existing trees and creates sightlines to the old town and the town hall.
